Why sell digital products on Etsy
When it comes to selling digital downloads, Etsy is the undisputed champ. With over 80 million active buyers, it’s a veritable marketplace for digital goods. But why should you start selling digital products on Etsy?
Let’s explore a few reasons:
1. Selling digital downloads is typically a low-cost endeavor. You don’t have to worry about inventory or packaging costs, and you can sell an unlimited number of products without incurring additional fees.
2. Etsy also has a built-in audience of engaged buyers who are actively seeking out unique and interesting items. And because Etsy allows you to set your own price and only charges 6.5% of the sale, you have the potential to earn a healthy return on your investment.
3. Once you’ve created and listed your digital products, you get to sit back and relax while the sales come rolling in. Unlike physical products that require your time and attention to fulfill each order, pack it up and arrange delivery, digital downloads are delivered instantly (and automatically) after purchase, so you can earn money while you sleep! Talk about passive income!
4. Etsy is a trusted platform with a strong reputation. By selling on Etsy, you benefit from the site’s established name and large customer base. This can help you quickly build a loyal following and increase sales.
Now that we’ve talked about some of the reasons why selling digital products on Etsy is a great idea, let’s get your creative juices flowing and take a look at some of the most profitable and popular digital products you can sell as a side hustle or full-time business venture.

How to create digital products to sell on Etsy
Let’s face it, if you’re not crafty or good with making things physically, digital products are the way to go on Etsy.
By creating digital products that can be downloaded and printed at home, you can tap into a whole new group of potential customers. And the best part is that it’s really easy to get started. All you need is a little creativity and an understanding of what buyers are looking for.
Many people use Adobe Creative Suite to make their digital products but it’s not absolutely necessary. And it’s a learning curve. If you’re not familiar with Photoshop or Illustrator, there are other (less expensive) options available.
Canva: Canva is a user-friendly graphic design tool that’s perfect for creating digital products like social media graphics, colouring sheets, labels, and more. You can sign up for a free account which is great to get you started, or upgrade to Canva Pro for $12.99/month to unlock even more features.
PicMonkey: PicMonkey is another great option for designing digital products. The basic membership is just $7.99/month or you can upgrade to unlock the more advanced features like layers, graphics, and fonts.
PlanifyPro: I was recently introduced to PlanifyPro and I’m in love! It’s a drag and drop editor specifically for designing digital planners. There’s a free version to get you started, but if you plan to sell the planners you create, you’ll have to sign up for a pro account. Tips for success when selling digital products on Etsy
With so many digital products out there these days, how can you make yours stand out from the crowd?
Here are some tips to help you get started:
1. Make sure your products are first rate and meet the expectations of your buyers. With so many options available, Etsy shoppers are unlikely to be satisfied with a subpar product. Spending an extra 30 minutes on perfecting your digital download might mean the difference between a one star and a five star review.
2. Pay close attention to the keywords you use in your product descriptions and tags. Use language that potential buyers would use when searching for your type of product.
3. Choose a niche and focus your product offerings around that. Don’t confuse things by offering digital planners, website themes and wedding signs in your shop. By catering to a specific customer, you’ll be more likely to build a loyal customer base.
4. Offer a freebie! Potential buyers are more likely to purchase a product if they’re getting something of value for free. This could be a mini version of your digital product, a sample chapter of an e-book, or a set of printable labels.
5. Don’t forget the power of good old-fashioned marketing. Get the word about your product out on social media and other online platforms. Start an email list and send your subscribers discount codes and first choice for new products.
6. Ensure you have clear images of your products. How do you that when you don’t have a physical product? You can buy mockups on – you guessed it – Etsy! Or design them yourself on Canva.
7. DO NOT be that person who copies someone else’s design. Not only is it unethical, but it’s also illegal. If you’re caught, your Etsy shop will be shut down, you’ll never be able to open another one and you could face legal action.
8. Offer excellent customer service. This should go without saying but I’ll say it anyway. If a customer is unhappy with a purchase, do whatever you can to make it right. Respond to messages and promptly and courteously.
9. Have a clear refund policy in place. Usually when selling digital downloads on Etsy, there is a no refund policy. Mostly because once a customer has downloaded the product, there’s no way to “return” it. But it’s important to be clear about this in your listing and in your shop policies.
10. Finally, keep an eye on your competition. Not in a creepy, obsessed kind of way but know what they’re up to. What products are other Etsy sellers selling? How much are they selling them for? Are their product descriptions well written? Do they have good quality photos? Take note of what’s working well for them and try to implement (not copy!) some of those strategies in your own shop.
